Natural Kratom vs. 7-OH: What the New Federal Rules Mean

Natural Kratom vs. 7-OH: What the New Federal Rules Mean

Federal Officials Are Drawing a Clearer Line on Kratom. Here's Why It Matters.

October 2026 | Kratom News & Education

For years, traditional kratom leaf and highly concentrated kratom-derived products have often been discussed as though they're the same thing.

But they're not. And recent federal developments suggest regulators are beginning to make that distinction more clearly.

On October 9, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced updated actions involving 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and several related substances. The announcement reflects a more targeted approach to products containing unusually high concentrations of certain alkaloids.

For consumers who prefer traditional kratom powder, this is an important development worth understanding.

Natural Kratom and Concentrated 7-OH Are Not the Same

Kratom comes from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia.

The leaves naturally contain several alkaloids, most notably mitragynine. Another alkaloid, 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), occurs naturally in much smaller quantities.

Over the past several years, however, the marketplace has changed.

Products containing highly concentrated 7-OH have become increasingly common, including tablets, gummies, and specially formulated extracts. Some contain concentrations far beyond those typically found in natural kratom leaves.

This distinction matters because a product containing naturally occurring trace amounts of 7-OH is fundamentally different in composition from one intentionally manufactured or enhanced to deliver much higher concentrations.

Federal regulators are now addressing that difference more explicitly.

What Federal Officials Announced

On October 9, the Department of Justice announced that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) would issue updated Notices of Intent concerning 7-OH and related substances.

The updated approach incorporates recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that establish specific concentration and alkaloid-ratio thresholds.

Under the proposal, certain products could become subject to Schedule I controls if they exceed specified limits involving 7-OH or mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI).

The recommended thresholds include:

  • More than 1 milligram per gram in solid products.

  • More than 1 milligram per milliliter in liquid products.

  • A mitragynine-to-7-OH/MGPI ratio below 100:1.

These criteria are intended to help distinguish products containing trace amounts of these substances from those that have been intentionally concentrated or enhanced.

Importantly, this is an ongoing federal scheduling process—not a final determination that all traditional kratom products are legal or safe.

The DEA's updated notice appeared in the Federal Register on October 14, 2026.

Why This Matters for Traditional Kratom Consumers

For people who purchase traditional kratom powder, one of the biggest concerns surrounding the rise of concentrated 7-OH products has been the possibility that all kratom products would be treated alike.

The latest federal action acknowledges a meaningful distinction between the chemical composition of natural botanical kratom and certain concentrated formulations.

That doesn't eliminate the regulatory uncertainty surrounding kratom. Federal and state requirements still matter, and the FDA continues to express concerns about kratom's safety.

However, recognizing these differences creates an opportunity for more precise discussions about product composition, manufacturing practices, testing, and consumer protection.

Rather than treating every kratom-derived product as interchangeable, regulators are examining what is actually in the finished product.

That's an important distinction.

Product Transparency Matters More Than Ever

As the kratom marketplace continues to evolve, consumers have good reason to pay closer attention to what they're purchasing.

Product labels and marketing descriptions don't always tell the entire story.

A product described as "natural" or "plant-derived" may still contain concentrated alkaloids at levels significantly higher than those typically found in traditional leaf powder.

That's why independent laboratory testing and accurate product information are so important.

Consumers should look for vendors that provide meaningful information about their products, including:

  • Alkaloid content, including mitragynine and 7-OH.

  • Independent laboratory testing.

  • Heavy metal and microbial screening.

  • Clear product descriptions and accessible batch information.

These practices don't guarantee a product is risk-free, but they can help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.

Where Koala T Herbals Stands

At Koala T Herbals, we've always believed that quality begins with knowing what's in the product.

Our focus is on natural kratom leaf powder, consistency, and transparency—not chasing increasingly concentrated formulations simply because they're becoming popular.

We believe consumers deserve straightforward product information and access to meaningful laboratory results.

The recent federal developments reinforce why these priorities matter.

As the industry changes, we'll continue following the science, monitoring regulatory developments, and evaluating our practices to meet applicable requirements and the expectations of our customers.

For us, building trust isn't about making the biggest claims.

It's about being consistent, being transparent, and standing behind what we sell.

What Happens Next?

The federal scheduling process is still developing.

According to the October 14 Federal Register notice, a new temporary scheduling order could be published on or after November 13, 2026.

Until final actions are taken, the legal and regulatory implications remain subject to change.

Consumers and businesses should continue monitoring federal announcements as well as applicable state laws.

The takeaway: Federal officials are increasingly recognizing that traditional botanical kratom and products containing highly concentrated 7-OH should not automatically be treated as identical.

That's a meaningful development for the kratom industry—and one worth watching closely.
